The National Ex-Officio of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Alhaji Usman Abbas Shehu (Osculator), has urged the Plateau State Government to incorporate the state chapter of SWAN into its budgetary provisions to ensure the smooth execution of its activities.
Alhaji Usman made this appeal during the SWAN Plateau State Chapter elective congress held at Mees Palace on November 21, 2024. The congress witnessed the emergence of a new executive committee for the state chapter.
In his supervisory role at the congress on behalf of the National Secretariat, Alhaji Usman Abbas expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election, commending it as compliant with the statutes of the National Secretariat.
He used the occasion to emphasize the need for government support through the state’s Ministry of Youth and Sports. “I want to call on the Plateau State Government to assist the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Plateau State Chapter, especially the newly elected executive committee, to ensure the proper welfare of this association,” he said.
Alhaji Usman further urged the government to ensure SWAN’s inclusion in proposals for national and international sporting events. “Whenever the Ministry of Sports is making submissions for events, the SWAN Plateau State Chapter must be included, with its slot clearly recognized in the budget proposal,” he emphasized.
On behalf of the National SWAN President, Benjamin Isaiah, and the Vice President, North-Central Zone, Mallam Olayinka Owolewa, Alhaji Usman congratulated the newly elected SWAN Plateau State executive committee.
The elective congress saw Alfred Saiki emerge as Chairman, Sammy Adesoji as Vice Chairman, Kaneng Ladoja as Treasurer, and Rhairom Zamora as Assistant General Secretary.
Alhaji Usman’s remarks underscored the importance of collaboration between SWAN and the government to enhance sports journalism and ensure effective coverage of sporting events at all levels.
