A two-day cricket introduction programme has commenced in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State as part of efforts to promote grassroots sports development and discover young talents across selected schools in the area.
The programme, which began on May 25, 2026, at Government Secondary School, Mangu, featured participants in the Under-12 and Under-17 categories for both boys and girls.
Organisers disclosed that six schools have been selected for the cricket development initiative, with Government Secondary School, Mangu hosting the opening session, while five other schools are expected to converge at a central field for the next phase of the programme.
The training sessions focused on the basics of batting, fielding, and bowling, introducing students to the fundamentals of the sport.
Speaking on the development, field officer of Plateau State Cricket, Aliyu Magaji, said the students showed excitement and enthusiasm upon the arrival of the instructors and facilitators.
According to him, the school principal and teachers warmly received the team before a brief meeting was held with the school management and sports coordinator ahead of the field demonstrations.
During the practical session, several talented students were identified and selected for further follow-up and development in the sport.
As part of the programme, a cricket starter pack was presented to the principal of Government Secondary School, Mangu, Mr. Milaham Policap.
Reacting to the gesture, the principal appreciated the Plateau State Sports Council and the Nigeria Cricket Federation for their support towards the growth and development of cricket in Plateau State and Nigeria at large.
The facilitators and instructors at the programme included Coach Tisgen Lucas, Coach Samson Yarima, Plateau State Cricket Association Chairman Mr. Stephen Dayok, and Field Officer Aliyu Magaji.
The organisers noted that the initiative is aimed at deepening grassroots participation in cricket while nurturing future talents from Plateau State.
