In a powerful gesture of unity and respect, Chelsea Football Club will donate a share of their FIFA Club World Cup player bonuses to the families of Portuguese brothers Diogo Jota and André Silva, both of whom tragically passed away earlier this year in a car accident.
Chelsea were crowned champions of the newly expanded Club World Cup after a commanding 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the final at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey. The victory earned the club approximately 115 million in prize money, with15.5 million (£11.4m) set aside for squad bonuses.
However, in a unanimous and emotional decision made between the club and the players, a portion of this bonus pool will go to the families of Jota and Silva. Although neither played for Chelsea, the gesture honors their legacy and the close bonds they shared within the footballing world particularly with Chelsea forward Pedro Neto, a close friend of both brothers.
