A grassroots cricket development programme aimed at introducing young students to the game of cricket was successfully held from May 25 to 26, 2026, in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The two-day programme, organised for Under-9 and Under-17 boys and girls, took place at Government Secondary School, Mangu, and the Central Field in Mangun District.
The initiative focused on teaching participants the basics of batting, fielding, and bowling as part of efforts to expand cricket development at the grassroots level in Plateau State.
Day One Activities
The programme commenced on May 25 at Government Secondary School, Mangu, where instructors and facilitators were warmly received by the school management, teachers, and excited students.
Following a brief meeting with the school principal and sports coordinator, the facilitators moved to the field to demonstrate the fundamentals of cricket to the students.
The session featured practical demonstrations and hands-on participation, with several talented young players identified during the exercise for future follow-up and development.
Day Two Activities
On the second day, the team moved to Mangun District in Mangu Local Government Area, where five additional schools participated in the cricket introduction exercise.
Organisers described the event as an exciting and engaging experience, noting the warm hospitality received from the schools and host community.
Students actively participated in the sessions while instructors guided them through the practical aspects of the game, giving many of the participants their first experience with cricket equipment and gameplay techniques.
At the end of the programme, starter packs were presented to six participating schools, namely:
Government Secondary School, Mangu,
Dashwet Memorial School,
ECWA Grace Academy
Nyamlight, Community Comprehensive School,
Government Secondary School, Nyemdung and
Nyenpam Model School.
Speaking during the event, Mrs. Godiya Turba, a games instructor, appreciated the Plateau State Sports Council and the Nigeria Cricket Federation for their continued support towards the growth and development of cricket in Plateau State and Nigeria as a whole.
The programme facilitators included Coach Tisgen Lucas, Coach Samson Yarima, Plateau State Cricket Association Chairman Mr. Stephen Dayok, and Field Officer Aliyu Magaji.
The organisers stated that the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to discover and nurture young cricket talents across communities in Plateau State while increasing awareness and participation in the sport among school children.
