So elated with the massive amassing of medals by the Plateau State contingent in the ongoing National Sports Festival in Ogun State, former minority leader of the Nigerian Senate, Hon. Simon Davou Mwadkwon has reiterated the fact that some mentions need commended for us to get more.
Simon Mwadkwon, the politician and educationist, while speaking with www.ssimedia247.com.ng says: “Appearing and displaying the talents you’ve got at that level is one thing, and going ahead to beat other contestants is a plus, and that means some individuals need to be commended.”
He continues: “Number one is the Governor of the State, the man of the people that always makes sure the welfare of the people comes tops. I read from your website that he promised gold medalists one million naira, silver medalists #750,000 and bronze medalists #500,000. With this motivation and their well-being on top of the list, why won’t the athletes perform and exceed their past outings? I will also commend the Coaches, the relentless athletes, different sports association officials and you journalists overthere that feed us with the up to date day by day report of what is happening overthere.”
He concludes:”If the motivation by the Governor can make them perform better than the last edition, winning more gold medals even at this time than the entire National Sports Festival in 2022, then what these athletes need to compete favourably well with States like Delta, Edo, Lagos, and others is to improve on the training facilities back at home here.”
Here is the summary of medals amassed yesterday at Day 7 where Plateau State added two more gold medals to make it 6 thus far to surpass the 4 gold medals recorded in the whole national sports festival in 2022 in Delta State.
A total of 8 medals were added:
- Francis James, Gold in Athletics in the 10000m race.
- Tina Micah, Gold in the Stroke play event, in Golf.
- Punshak Istifanus, Silver in Powerlifting in the 49kg class.
- Adamu Sadiq, Bronze in the -66kg class in Judo.
- Caroline Dung, Cycling, won Bronze in the 10km Individual Time Trial.
- Sunday Morris won Bronze in Match Play, Golf.
- Beatrice Onoja, has Bronze in Golf, match play event.
- Richard Adamu, grab the last medal of the day in gymnastics, Artistics Parallel bars apparatus.
Total medals after close of Saturday events for Plateau State stood at 27, from 6 Gold Medas, 4 Silver Medals and 17 Bronze Medals.
EVENTS FOR SUNDAY 25TH MAY
- HOCKEY: Plateau Peacocks will play Kaduna in the Semi final after defeating Nasarawa 3-0. Match starts by 12noon at Ijebu Ode.
- VOLLEYBALL: Plateau male team will face Kano in the Semi finals by 9am at Alake Sports centre.
- ATHLETICS and Para-athletics, with focus on 3000m steeple chase on Sunday evening by 6pm at the MKO Stadium.
- TABLE TENNIS, by 9am at Alake Stadium.
- KICKBOXING. Plateau will feature in Semi final bout in Heavyweight and lightweight at Baptist school by 9am
- GOLF: More to play for on Sunday in one Semi final and quarter finals, by 9am at the Abeokuta Golf club.
- CHESS: Events will be concluded on Sunday, hoping for a good results at Remo Stadium by 8am.
- SQUASH after lossing in the individual events, will compete in the doubles on Sunday.
