It was a surprise to many on ground that graced the maiden edition of the Hon. Dr. Suleiman Yahaya Kwande Roller Soccer Competition with the large turnout that included not only adults, teenagers but little kids as well.
The interesting mini tournament that saw four teams from different places in Jos City that include: Size2 Skaters Club, Light Skaters Club, Street Skaters and Rantiya Skating Academy; saw Light Skaters Club emerged Champions after beating Size2 Skaters club 4-2 on penalties after the regulation time score ended 0-0.
In the 3rd place match between Street Skaters and Rantiya Skating Academy ended 1-0 in favour of Street Skaters Club.
The sponsor of the maiden edition of the Skating Roller Soccer, Hon. Dr. Suleiman Yahaya Kwande called on all and sundry interested in the game to follow the rules and regulations that governs the sport in order to maximize its benefits.
In his words: “In Skating Roller Soccer lies alot of benefits like aerobic exercise that helps protect your heart. Soccer Roller skating also works several muscles, especially the lower body.”
Hon. Dr. Suleiman Yahaya Kwande continues: “The game is also lucrative too but don’t forget that the sport preaches discipline and before you start roller skating, ensure that you take precautions, including wearing the proper safety equipment. With what I see here today, I’m giving out knee guard, elbow guard and palm guard.”
Roller Soccer, which came into existence in 1990 in San Francisco, is a derivative of football played with rollerblades. It combines football, ice hockey and roller skating. The equipments needed are rollerblading, helmets and other protective kits.
It would be recalled that the first Roller Soccer Works Cup took place in London, England in 2003.
