PLATEAU ROCKS PROMISE STRONGER COMEBACK IN KADUNA
The recently concluded phase one of the NBBF Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball Premier League, Savannah Conference, was hosted in Jos, Plateau State. The tournament brought together top women’s basketball teams from across the northern part of country for five days of competitive action.
The host state team, Plateau Rocks, gave a good account of themselves and showcased the growing talent in women’s basketball in the state.
The Muftwang Girls began their campaign with determination despite limited preparation time.
The Rocks started their journey with a hard-fought loss to Aso Sky Queens. The Jos girls gave it their all and showed promise in their first outing.
Determined to build on the beautiful display from day one, Plateau Rocks faced Air Warriors but fell 54-66. The fighting spirit in camp remained high as the girls believed they could turn things around.
The breakthrough came on day three as Plateau Rocks secured their first win of the league with a 78-68 victory over Nasarawa Amazons. The win boosted morale across the team.
Nigeria Customs defeated the Rocks on day four, 75-42. Day five was a battle to the wire. Plateau Rocks refused to give up and took the fight to the Titans.
Fans stayed on their feet with cheers as the Rocks gave it everything, but narrowly lost by just one point, 59-60.
The second phase of the league will tip off in a few weeks in Kaduna. Plateau Rocks have resumed training with the goal of coming out on top in Kaduna and improving on their phase one performance.
The Chairman of the Plateau State Basketball Association, Dr. Chollom Paul Lomak, and the board members expressed appreciation to the Plateau State Government and the Plateau State Sports Council for their tremendous support of Plateau Rocks.
Speaking on the team’s outing, Dr. Chollom said:
“About our girls, I think our preparation for the first phase was not optimal, considering the fact that the addition to the team was late, which did not afford the team enough time to blend. We expect that the putting in the second phase will be better as the team works on their lapses.”
The chairman also appreciated the fans, the media, and basketball stakeholders who came out in numbers to support Plateau Rocks throughout the tournament.
