Plateau State joined the global community to celebrate Olympic Day 2025, themed:
“Move, Learn, Discover – Together for a Better World.”
The event brought together athletes, students, coaches, government officials, and lovers of sports in a colorful gathering that showcased Plateau’s commitment to excellence, unity, and youth development through sport.
Hon. Musa Ashoms, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, gave an energetic and passionate speech on behalf of the Plateau State Government. He saluted the state’s athletes and sportsmen and women for their dedication, commitment, and achievements in representing the state, Nigeria, and Africa.
“You’ve raised our banner. You’ve raised the bar on how people see us both indoors and outside. You deserve a round of applause,” he said.
He also used the occasion to commend Governor Caleb Mutfwang, describing him as a leader who “understands leadership and gives sports a lot of premium.”
Speaking of the recent success of athletes at Abeokuta, the commissioner revealed that despite modest expectations, Plateau athletes surpassed predictions and returned with more medals.
“Before we left for Abeokuta, we thought we’d get fewer medals—but the athletes surprised us. We are grateful, and all the promises we made will be fulfilled. We’ll even do more,” he assured.
Ashoms also emphasized early preparation for the upcoming Junior Sports Festival in Delta, calling for greater synergy among schools and stakeholders. He encouraged the private sector to partner with government in funding sports, affirming that Plateau remains the hub of sporting excellence in Nigeria.
Taking the global perspective, Coach Lorinda Yohana Sati, representing the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and ANOCA, read the official Olympic Day message.
She emphasized the importance of the day as a symbol of global unity and the founding of the modern Olympic Movement on June 23, 1894.
“This year’s theme, ‘Move, Learn, Discover Together for a Better World’, reflects our belief that sport goes beyond performance. It connects people, promotes values of excellence, friendship, and respect,” she said.
She also noted that African athletes continue to shine internationally, adding that 2025 marks a milestone in the growth of African sport.
Closing the celebration, Professor Ezra Gunen, Director of Sports for Plateau State, appreciated all who participated and assured them of formal recognition.
“To all of you here today, your presence is acknowledged. Everyone who registered will receive a certificate of participation,” he announced.
Prof. Gunen ended with a vision for greater participation in the coming years:
“I pray that next year, this entire field will be filled with more Plateau people. Let’s continue using sports to promote peace and tourism in our state.”
