Hockey Reaches The 17 Local Government Areas As Plateau State Hockey Chairman Commends The State Government
The chairman of Plateau State Hockey Association (PSHA), Arthur Jumbo, and the board members have expressed appreciation to the Plateau State government for its role in the development of hockey in the state since the board was inaugurated on April 4th, 2025.
Speaking during a radio programme interview session on 103 Sports, KT103.9 FM, on Tuesday, June 30th, 2026, Jumbo described the progress recorded in hockey under his leadership as a result of commitment, vision, and partnership with the government.
The hockey chairman acknowledged that he met several challenges when he assumed office. However, he said his board was able to overhaul both the male and female teams with support from the state government.
“When we came in, the teams were not really at the top level we expected. But we refused to be deterred. With government backing, my personal sacrifices, and the board members, we rebuilt and repositioned the teams for competition,” Jumbo said.
In preparation for the Nigeria Super League, Jumbo disclosed that he camped both teams to ensure they were physically, technically, and mentally prepared for the league; that’s why the results are showing.
“That camping was crucial and full of benefits. It showed our seriousness and gave the players the confidence to represent Plateau with pride,” he noted.
In the area of grassroots development of the sport, Jumbo further revealed that the board’s plan to grow hockey across the state is firmly on course. According to him, the association is working hard to take the sport to all seventeen local government areas of Plateau State.
“Our goal is to make hockey accessible in every local government. That is the only way to discover new talents and secure the future of the sport in Plateau,” he added.
He commended the Plateau State Sports Council for its consistent support to the teams. The chairman called on private individuals and corporate organizations to complement government’s efforts in developing hockey.
Meanwhile, both male and female Plateau Hockey teams continue with their brilliant runs in the ongoing Super League.
On Tuesday, the Jos girls, Plateau Queens defeated South West 4-1 to maintain their hundred percent record, while Plateau Tigers also beat IGP Police 4-0.
