In a significant step toward advancing sports development in Plateau State, Jos is hosting the National Association of Athletics Technical Officials (NAATO) training program for the very first time. The event, which began on Monday, June 23rd, is scheduled to end on Friday, June 27th.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, Professor Ezra Gunen, the Director of Sports in Plateau State, described the event as “long overdue” and a “game changer” for the region.
“This is the first time the NAATO training is being conducted in Jos, and it’s happening for many important reasons,” Professor Gunen stated. “Before now, our officials were not certified to officiate at local, national, or international athletics events. That automatically disqualified them from participating in core aspects of competitions. But with this training, all that should change.”
According to Professor Gunen, the event is not just about certification. It is also a strategic move to strengthen sports education in the state. “The training will serve as a solid knowledge base for our university lecturers, especially those in physical and health education. They’ll gain better insight into the technical aspects of officiating different athletics events. This knowledge will trickle down to students and future professionals,” he explained.
He also emphasized the benefits to athletics coaches across Plateau State. “Our coaches will now understand the rules and formats that guide every event. This will help them train their athletes better and prepare them for competitive success.”
The Director was full of gratitude for the presence of the President of NAATO, describing it as “a strong endorsement” of the state’s efforts in sports development.
In addition, Professor Gunen revealed that Jos is fast becoming a hub for sports knowledge and training. “By the grace of God, the Women’s Commission of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) will hold its seminar here in Jos during the first week of July. We are also in discussions with the NOC to bring the Basic Course in Sports Management to Jos very soon,” he announced.
Athletics officials from all over Plateau State gathered in Jos to take part in the training, highlighting the growing enthusiasm for technical development in the sport across the region.
