Professional Footballers Association Of Nigeria Backs Akwuegbu For NFF Leadership:
General Secretary of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) and former Nigeria international, Edema Fuludu, has welcomed Ben Akwuegbu’s reported ambition to contest for the presidency of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Fuludu described the former Super Eagles forward as an experienced international whose knowledge of Nigerian football could be valuable in the administration and development of the game.
He said former players as Akwuegbu with the competence, commitment and ambition to contribute to football administration should be encouraged to take up leadership positions.
“Ben Akwuegbu is an experienced former international who has made contributions to football development,” Fuludu said.
The PFAN General Secretary also stated that the association would be willing to support former players who demonstrate the capacity to provide effective leadership for Nigerian football.
“PFAN would support ex-players like Akwuegbu who have the capacity and ambition to lead Nigerian football.”
Akwuegbu’s reported interest comes amid renewed discussions about the future direction of the NFF and calls for reforms in the administration of Nigerian football.
The debate has also heightened demands for greater representation of former professionals in football governance, with proponents arguing that ex-players bring first-hand knowledge of issues surrounding player welfare, development and the overall structure of the game.
Fuludu’s position therefore places Akwuegbu’s potential NFF ambition within the wider call for former internationals to play a more active role in football administration.
According to the PFAN leadership, football experience alone may not be sufficient; former players seeking leadership positions must also demonstrate the administrative capacity, vision and commitment required to move the game forward.
As consultations and discussions over reforms in Nigerian football continue, the emergence of former internationals as potential contenders for key leadership positions could further shape the debate over the future leadership and direction of the NFF.
For Fuludu, former players who have the ability to lead like Akwuegbu should be given the opportunity to move beyond their achievements on the pitch and contribute to the development of Nigerian football from the boardroom. He then calls on other ex-internationals to support Akwuegbu in His ambition for the top NFF job.
