BADUNG SUNDAY DAUDA OF PLATEAU EMERGES AFRICAN CHAMPION IN AFRICAN PARA CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
BADUNG Sunday Dauda, of Plateau State conquered Africa in the “B” class of the recently concluded African Para and Track Cycling Championship, held in Abuja.
BADUNG became both the Nigerian and African Champion by defeating the current holder, Demola Yekeem from Oyo State, to clinch gold in the “B” class.
Presenting the athletes from the championship to the Director of Sports at the Sports Council, the Chairman of Plateau State Cycling Association, who is also the First Vice President of Cycling Federation, a Cycling Board member representing the North central zone and Chairman of Red Crown Cycling Club, Jos, Mr James Hamidu, described this feat as remarkable considering that Badung started riding as a Sports only in February this year, and his first outing was at the National Para Games in February 2026, where he won silver.
The Association Chairman revealed that by becoming the African Champion, Badung alongside his pilot Elkanah Samari, have earned the invitation to camp ahead of the Commonwealth games in Scotland later this year where they are expected to represent Nigeria. Mr Hamidu attributed this success to hard work, sacrifice and strong collaboration and support from the State government.
Other winners presented to the Director of Sports include Tukur Mohammed, an amputee Cyclist, who won four gold medals in the “C” class and Rejoice Ringnan Danjuma who also delivered gold for the State in the junior female category.
The chairman concluded by making a strong appeal to the Sports Council to help secure International passports for the Athletes to aid their international travels.
Responding, the Director of Sports, Prof Ezra Gunen, congratulated the athletes and the officials and charged them not to relent in the pursuit of excellence assuring them that governor Mutfwang will continue to support sports in all ramifications.
Prof Gunen described the chairman of the Association Mr Hamidu, as someone who understands the cycling terrain as such makes it easier for the council to relate with the Association. He noted that their demands would be looked into.
