SSA To The President On Grassroots Sports Development Endorses 2026 Renewed Hope Unity Cup Describing It As A Tool To Transform And Empower Nigerian Youths
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, has thrown his full weight behind the 2026 Renewed Hope Unity Cup, following a strategic visit by the organizers led by Hon. (Dr.) Prince Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, describing the initiative as a bold step towards transforming grassroots football and empowering Nigerian youths.
The high-level engagement in Abuja saw the project team present a detailed framework of the nationwide tournament, which is set to engage all 774 Local Government Areas across Nigeria, making it one of the most ambitious grassroots football programmes ever introduced in the country.
Speaking during the visit, Adeboye emphasized the far-reaching impact of the initiative, noting that it aligns perfectly with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“This is not just a football competition; it is a national intervention. It is about creating opportunities, building unity, and giving young Nigerians a platform to thrive through sports.”
The SSA, who was appointed as Tournament Patron and Coordinator, commended the organizers for developing a structured model that goes beyond competition to include youth mobilization, community engagement, and long-term talent development.
“When sports is properly structured at the grassroots, it becomes a tool for peace, inclusion, and national development. This initiative captures that vision perfectly.”
On his part, Hon. (Dr.) Prince Suleiman Yahaya Kwande described the Renewed Hope Unity Cup as a transformative project designed to convert government vision into measurable impact across communities.
“This initiative is more than a tournament—it is a nation-building platform. We are deliberately creating a system that connects policy to people, giving young Nigerians across every local government a sense of belonging and opportunity.”
Kwande further explained that the competition will feature one team per local government, with each team comprising 35 players, ensuring widespread participation and inclusivity.
“Our goal is simple—no community left behind. We are taking football to the grassroots in its purest form, while also building a structure that identifies, nurtures, and elevates talent to higher levels.”
He also highlighted the broader vision of the project, which includes mobilizing over 387,000 youth ambassadors nationwide to promote unity, peace, and civic responsibility.
“We are not just discovering football talents; we are raising leaders, building communities, and strengthening national unity through sports.”
Kwande commended the SSA for his leadership and commitment to grassroots sports development, noting that his involvement gives the initiative strong institutional backing.
“With the support of the SSA and the Presidency, we are confident that this project will deliver real, lasting impact. This is how we turn hope into legacy.”
The initiative also includes provisions for equipment, welfare packages, and allowances for players and officials, as well as a structured coaching development programme that will train over 100 coaches nationwide, ensuring sustainability beyond the competition.
Adeboye, while appreciating the visit, reiterated his commitment to supporting impactful initiatives that align with national development priorities.
“We will continue to champion programmes that empower our youths, strengthen communities, and position Nigeria as a force in global sports.”
With strong backing from the Presidency and a clear vision for nationwide impact, the 2026 Renewed Hope Unity Cup is already generating excitement as a potential game-changer in Nigeria’s sports ecosystem—one that promises to transform grassroots football and inspire a new generation of champions.
